Why Radial engines are preferred?

Radial engines use a dry sump… meaning the oil is in a separate tank from the crankcase. When the engine sits, the oil that is coating the inside of the crankcase leaks down into the lower cylinders. That’s why you see all of the smoke on start up…it’s burning off the excess oil in the cylinders.
